Wednesday’s session was similar to Tuesday’s on Wall Street: hordes of buyers tried to put the indexes back in the direction of travel for part of the session, before laying down their arms in the face of the counterattack from the bearish legion. When nine of the ten largest caps in the S&P500 index fall, it becomes hard not to get swept away with the bathwater. The exceptions are called Morgan Stanley (+4.3%), which did better than the competition at 4and quarter of 2021, Pfizer, a defensive health record or Booking, because the Omicron variant of the coronavirus is unlikely to prevent tourism from continuing. For the rest, the technology sector has still been rolled, except for a few rare names (Tesla, ASML, Electronic Arts). The Nasdaq 100 fell 1.3% yesterday and is now down 9% since the 1er January. The S&P500 was down 1.1% for a decline of 6% in 2022. The contrast with Europe is striking, since the STOXX Europe 600 ended yesterday up 0.5% and only shows a decline of 0.9% on its prices on December 31. The French CAC40 is even positive (0.6%) in 2022.

There is no convincing explanation for the brutal reversal of the American indices yesterday, except that the heavyweights of the rating no longer have it, the rating, and that they are over-ballasting the drop as they had over-vitamined the rise. It is clearly too early to buy the market downturn. In any case, this strategy does not seem to work until the end of the stock market sessions at the moment, it will be understood. There is a sense of déjà vu in there, since we have entered this period of great confusion characteristic of volatility spikes. In other words, some investors do just about anything in a hurry, while others are forced to withdraw from compartments that are too risky or too valued. The VIX index rose above 25 points, a level it had exceeded only twice in the last six months, very briefly in September and a little more at the November/December juncture, when it was climbed to 31 points.

We end the week on a paradox already mentioned above, which calls for another. The Financial Times yesterday devoted an article to the economic revival of shale gas and oil exploitation zones in the United States with soaring energy prices. Obviously, all this is not very environmental-friendly, but we already knew that polluting industries had taken their revenge on ESG last year on the stock market. And it continues this year since energy (including oil and gas extraction) is the most prolific sector, far ahead of the financial sector which is much talked about. Obviously, no one in finance wants to brag too much about overweighting this good old oil sector while on the front, everything absolutely needs to be painted green. A sector that has all the more attraction that it is correlated with inflation (it contributes to it) and that it pays large dividends, which is not negligible if the weather turns bad.

I arrive at my paradox by ricochet: while the oil sector parades, that of energy suppliers, grouped under the term “utilities” or “collective services” on the stock market, is struggling. Roughly speaking, the difference in performance between the two in three weeks is around 17%. A movement that had already largely begun last year. But why so much hate? The AlphaValue design office provides some answers. By a small sting of cynicism first, by recalling that it is currently not profitable to provide electricity at a fixed price because consumers and politicians are furious against energy companies, while hardly anyone is screaming against the fact that it is a formal cartel that allows the oil majors to sell their barrels at high prices.

AlphaValue emphasizes above all that utilities are currently investing more than oil companies to comply with green standards. They burn 100% of their cash flow, and even more sometimes, while the oil majors are at a mere 50%. As a result, the seconds can offer a bigger dividend than the first. And the former will be confronted, are already confronted, with rising financing costs. It’s unfair, but for now that’s how it is. If we add the price control measures decided by certain governments, we understand that utilities are the last wheel of the stock market coach, apparently even worse than telecoms.

Let’s leave the fabulous world of oil for leading indicators which are trending down in Europe this morning, due to the closing gap with the United States. Asia limits the damage even if the red dominates everywhere, in particular in Australia where the news is bad coming from the labor market, which is suffering heavily from the rise in coronavirus infections. On the geopolitical front, Sergei Lavrov and Antony Blinken are meeting today in Geneva to talk about the Ukrainian crisis, but the good connoisseurs of the diplomatic world do not seem to expect much from their dialogue.

Economic highlights of the day

Little data today, other than the US Leading Indicators Index for December at 4:00 p.m.

The euro retreats to 1.1323 USD. The ounce of gold is firm at 1841 USD. Oil fell back to 83.70 USD per barrel WTI and 86.64 USD per barrel Brent. The yield on US 10-year debt has calmed down to 1.77%. Bitcoin takes a slap at $38,845.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (January 19, 2022) – Ninety-five percent of Americans think misinformation is a problem, according to a poll by The Pearson Institute and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The majority of respondents say that social media giants, its users and some US politicians are responsible for its reckless spread.

As the nation attempts to combat the infodemic with empowerment strategies, the vast majority of the solutions offered are aimed at English speakers, leaving a serious void for the country. 41 million people who speak Spanish at home.

The Poynter Institute MediaWise has developed educational resources to provide tools for Spanish-speaking people in the United States over the age of 50 to become more critical consumers of online content. The MediaWise in Spainnotol, supported by Google News Initiative, will build on the success of the association’s highly effective program digital media education program for seniors and provide the older Spanish-speaking population with an on-demand service, Online course and educational resources on social media at no cost.

“Misinformation has no language or age barriers, and amplifies how vital quality news is to the world,” said Ashley Alese Edwards, US Partnerships Manager, Google News Lab. “The Google News Initiative is proud to partner with MediaWise and Noticias Telemundo on this important project and other efforts to strengthen information literacy and stop the spread of harmful misinformation.

Searching for a Nielsen study centers Hispanics as a vulnerable target for misinformation due to a greater reliance on the role social media and messaging apps play within the community to connect with friends and family around the world. The report states that “much of the content, both user-generated and shared, is in Spanish, Spanish or colloquial Spanish, challenging conventional fact-checking and content-moderation procedures. to be continued”.

“In recent elections, false and misleading information online influenced people’s perceptions of where candidates stand on certain issues,” said Miriam Valverde, program manager for MediaWise en Español. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, misinformation has also led some people to question the safety and value of evidence-based public health measures.”

The MediaWise in Spainnotol will provide media literacy counseling and training to enable older Spanish-speaking adults to spot misinformation online, including on the most popular social media platforms. The program will include a micro-learning course on WhatsApp and a series of informational videos on YouTube with internationally renowned journalists from Noticias Telemundo and the new MediaWise ambassadors, José Diaz-Balart and Julio Vaqueiro.

“We understand that these programs are more likely to have a positive impact if delivered and supported by someone they trust,” said Aaron Sharockman, who oversees media literacy and fact-checking initiatives at Poynter. . “José and Julio are serious journalists who have built meaningful relationships with their audiences for over 40 years combined. They are the ideal partners for this innovative and important work.

Of the days and nights that make up the life of a writer, only those that manage to illuminate his work should be of interest, those that make it intelligible to the reader, who is ultimately more important than the author and the work itself. Everything else, no matter how relevant it may be, is nothing more than morbidity or frivolity, that is, ambrosia for the masses. In this sense, the literature of the Colombian Caribbean has a variety of important issues to address this year, so that all the spotlights shamelessly point to the clandestine love affair with the offspring of Gabo and Susana Cato.

If what it is about is talking about García Márquez, it would be better to remember that forty years have passed since he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Not because of the award itself, which is still a capricious, overvalued and often corrupt recognition. But because it was awarded to a writer who in 1982 had already been enjoying immense admiration by millions of readers around the world for fifteen years, as well as the recognition of specialized critics. Despite what they continue to proclaim mediocre and envious, the great damage that Gabo did to Colombian literature was to put it to play for the first time in the great leagues of universal literature. And since the insolent feat came from a dusty Caribbean village and not from the august capital populated by learned princes, it is unforgivable.

Forty years have also passed since the publication of the crown weaver, by Germán Espinosa, a work of unquestionable merit and incomparable beauty that many have not heard of, not even in Cartagena, the birthplace of an author to whom the local insult artists, for living in Bogotá, granted the title of «cartacachaco », while on the other side of the sea he was distinguished with the Order of Arts and Letters of France and UNESCO declared his novel «representative work of human letters».

They don’t want to talk about the works of the cataquero or the Cartagena native? There is no problem, let’s talk about a Barranquilla native. Just as the Ministry of Culture declared 2020 the Manuel Zapata Olivella Year and 2021 the Héctor Rojas Herazo Year, 2022 should undoubtedly be the Cepeda Samudio Year. I will limit myself to pointing out three reasons:

First, it is the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Álvaro Cepeda Samudio, one of the most talented members —and without a doubt the most avant-garde— of the legendary Barranquilla Group, which occurred on October 12, 1972 at the Memorial Hospital in New York; Second, half a century has passed since the first edition of Juana’s stories, published and illustrated by his friend Alejandro Obregón; Third, sixty years have passed since the publication in Bogotá of The big house, by Mito Editions.

And so we could go on: sixty years, for example, of breathing the summer, by Héctor Rojas Herazo, sixty the bad hour, from Gabo, thirty-five of In December the breezes came, from Marvel Moreno, anyway…

The only thing that could be interesting about the gossip about “Gabo’s secret daughter” is the young woman’s age, 30 years. This means that his birth occurred just when his laureate father was writing Love and Other Demons, whose passionate story is starred by Sierva —who shares the initial with Susana— and her forbidden lover, whose significant name is “Cayetano”, that is, the one who is silent.

A cast that deserves an Oscar

The script of Don’t Look Up is full of subtle messages about today’s world. Adam McKay’s film has been warmly received by critics, both positive and negative. To carry his work, the director of The Big Shot relied on a five-star cast.

On the poster, we find Leonardo DiCaprio in the skin of doctor Randall Mindy. While keeping an imperturbable seriousness, the actor knows how to balance his game and make it dynamic. We do not get bored of his character, welcomes some critics.

Regarding his female acolytes, the popular actresses are numerous. If Jennifer Lawrence is excellent, however, the gold medal goes to Meryl Streep. The humor and the explosive and crazy side of the latter convinced the public. The glamorous side that Cate Blanchett exudes in her role did not escape applause either.

Some, however, considered the cast to be “a bit too much”. For example, many people do not understand the presence of Timothée Chalamet. According to them, we could probably do without his character.

Strong and powerful messages

In the film, the two heroes try to warn the world of the danger that threatens them, unfortunately in vain. Through this scenario, Adam McKay conveys messages to today’s society. The collusion between politics and capitalism is very much reflected in their adventure. The film highlights the lack of importance that the government gives to scientific truths.

Besides, the media and social networks do not escape the viewfinder either. Adam criticizes these which can become poisonous. The mass manipulation carried out by the traditional media is also singled out. Leonardo DiCaprio describes Don’t Look Up as “an analogy of our modern culture”. A culture that is heavily manipulated and sliced.

Despite the very serious subject he tackles, humor is there to lighten it all up. Don’t Look Up remains a good film to watch between two sessions of casino games in line.

A successful start despite criticism

When Don’t Look Up came out, the public was there. In one week, it logged up to 152,290,000 hours of viewing on Netflix. With such an impressive start, he breaks records. Its closest competitor in the same period is The Unforgivable, directed by Sandra Bullock. This records nearly 21,310,000 hours of viewing. Adam McKay is left speechless by the success of his latest film.

However, the statistics do not tell everything about this film. One would think that Don’t Look Up is beyond reproach given its performances on screen and the records it makes. However, it is far from being the best film of the year according to several critics. This is reflected in the scores it has received on different platforms.

For example, on the Rotten Tomatoes site, it only achieves a score of 54%. Even if this rating is only the result of 293 reviews, it is not necessarily insignificant. On ComicBook, it’s listed as Leonardo DiCaprio’s first failed film since his role in The Great Gatsby. For David Fear of the Rolling Stones, this work remains well without transcending the emotions.

A key figure in French cinema for more than fifty years, the latter spoke in particular about the notion of loyalty on the set of the C8 channel program. His approach to the subject has surprised more than one.

Claude Lelouch exposes his conception of love and loyalty on the set of TPMP

On the occasion of this media release, the now 84-year-old man did not fail to answer certain personal questions asked by Cyril Hanouna and his group of columnists. This is how he was interpellated in particular by Matthieu Delormeau who asked him: “You don’t believe in fidelity? » in reference to his way of approaching each time in his films « multiple loves ».

Faced with such a curious question, Claude Lelouch nevertheless did not fail to demonstrate honesty in giving his perception of love and its corollary instituted by human society, which is loyalty. He expressed himself in these terms: “Love is like a drug. So we can be entitled to several stories, but each time, we have to take a little more. There is no going back”.

Subsequently, he even pushed his logic a little further by saying: “That’s why you have the right to make love all your life. You have the right to love stories all your life”. A design of his own of loving fidelity which certainly did not leave viewers indifferent.
However, he also affirmed at the same time all the love he had for his current partner Valérie Perrin.

A conception of love and fidelity that is reflected in all of his existence

When we look closely at the personal life of Claude Lelouch, we realize that he had to know many love stories.

The one who won the Palme d’or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1966 for the film a man and a woman has married three times in the past. These include Christine Cochet in 1967, Marie-Sophie Pochat in 1986 and Alessandra Martines in 1995.

He will also have been the companion of Anne Girardot and Évelyne Bouix thereafter before being in a relationship since 2006 with the screenwriter and novelist Valérie Perrin. In the confidences made by Claude Lelouch to the journalist Catherine Ceylac in the book À l’amour, à la vie, released in 2919, we even learn that he asked that he not be forbidden to see other people ” wives” in his previous marriages.

Claude Lelouch releases a new film based on a love story like no other

Entitled love is better than life, this production is the 50th film in the career of the man who also had the honor of winning two Oscars during his immense career.
In essence, the film tells the story of a man suffering from an incurable pathology and for whom the two best friends seek to offer an ultimate amorous passion.

Bodega El Lomo presents the first vineyard wine from the DO Islas Canarias

Bodega El Lomo’s Origen 1989 is the first vineyard wine from the DO Islas Canarias Canary Wine. It arises from grapes grown, elaborated and bottled in Tegueste, being its origin in a unique plot, nicknamed Los Laureles, located on the slopes of the valley at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level. The strains of the varietals that make up the vineyard are the result of the selection carried out more than 80 years ago by the family that owns the plot, of Basque origin, but great lovers of Canarian wine and its different varieties.

The back labeling with the toponymy of Tegueste, a novelty in this limited series

The wine from El Lomo, from the winemaker Clara Rodríguez, has the peculiarity of being the first to also be back-labelled with the toponymy of a municipality with a long wine-growing tradition, such as Tegueste. It is a limited series of 1,317 numbered bottles, created from the Listán Negro, Vijariego Negro, Tintilla and Castellana varieties. The creation of Origen 1989 is marked by the uniqueness of the vineyard: manual harvest carried out at its optimum point of maturity, spontaneous fermentation and six months spent in 500-litre French oak barrels.

The importance of bread

We like to sopete in soups, in sauces and in everything that is possible. However, the restoration has not always cared for bread with the respect it deserves. For this reason, it is worth highlighting the work that Mario Torres does making his own bread in his three restaurants: Donde Mario, La bodeguita de Enfrente and El calderito de la Abuela. The bread alone is already an experience to remember.

“Tradition says that every time we truly hug someone, we gain a day of life.”

Paulo Coelho

The pandemic has taken away a good part of our culture, our past and our affections. It has brought us fear, uncertainty, mistrust, and, as has now become clear even in the current policies of our governments, a serious mental health problem in the different layers of the population. The pandemic has not been innocuous in this field either.

And it has also left a painful problem in our relationships and our day to day: “the safety distance”, separation and rejection of any physical contact. We don’t touch each other, and many times, we barely recognize each other.

Life through a screen, the interaction in teleworking, the lack of physical bond, will leave, without a doubt, sequels that when this happen, and it will happen, we must make an effort to stop it. Even losing the modesty to communicate with words what the body cannot, until we overcome the fear of hugging.

The January 21st is celebrated on international hug day. And no, it is not a celebration arising from the pandemic. It has been celebrated since 1986, promoted by the American Kevin Zaborney, who wanted to highlight the need for affection and its manifestations, in a society like that of the United States -and in others with Anglo-Saxon roots- little given to public manifestations of Human warmth. It started out in a small town in Michigan, and became popular thanks to its spread on the Chase Calendar of Events.

But 35 years after the institutionalization of Hug Day, its commemoration becomes especially significant in the situation that we all suffer. And we are not only referring to the “hunger for skin”, to the need to feel in contact again. We refer, once we get out of the global crisis that has affected us socially as well as economically and culturally, to promote from the position that each one of us occupies, the return to embracing others. The search for justice. The search and the embrace of the rights of others, which Fundación por la Justicia proclaims in its slogan and demands in its commitments.

Octavio Paz received his Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990. And he addressed the Swedish Academy with a deep, visionary speech, which four decades later becomes painfully valid. For the Mexican poet, humanity was witnessing not only the end of a century, but also the end of a historical period. And he doubted: “Is an era of universal harmony and freedom dawning for all, or will tribal idolatries and religious fanaticism return, with their wealth of discord and tyranny?”

Right now, in an unprecedented health and global crisis, it is necessary to promote harmony and embrace in the face of the dreaded discord and tyranny. The inequalities –which have always been there- have become more evident. The gap between the so-called First World and the less favored countries has widened. Immersed in fear and isolation, we do not see the rights of others.

Perhaps the hug, the hand-to-hand link, will help save the chasm.

Let’s challenge resignations, challenge loneliness, distance and abandonment and, when fear passes, let’s hug again. Not only on January 21 of each year, but also.
